Quote of the Month

To know how to do a job is the accomplishment of labor;
To be available to tell others is the accomplishment of the teacher;
To inspire others to do better work is the accomplishment of management;
To be able to do all three is the accomplishment of true leaders.

~Guy Ferguson

Recipe of the Month
Chocolate Zucchini Cake
  2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa
  2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  1 teaspoon salt, optional
  1 cup sugar
1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened
  3/4 cup applesauce
  4 eggs
  1 tablespoon vanilla
  2 cups shredded zucchini (about 1 1/2 to 2 small, 10 oz.)
  Confectioners' sugar

In medium bowl, stir together flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon and salt, if desired. Set aside. In large mixing bowl at medium speed, beat together sugar and butter until light and fluffy. Beat in applesauce, eggs and vanilla until thoroughly blended. Reduce mixer speed to low and gradually beat in reserved flour mixture. Gently stir in zucchini. Pour into lightly greased 9-cup fluted tube pan.

Bake in preheated 350°F oven until cake tester inserted in center comes out clean, about 60 to 70 minutes. Cool on wire rack 10 minutes. With narrow spatula or knife, loosen cake from pan and gently shake onto serving plate. Cool completely. Dust with confectioners' sugar.

President Report

Dear NACE Members:

What a great meeting we had in January at Ford Field for our 2007 NACE Reunion...it was wonderful to network with some familiar faces and a ton of new members and guests to NACE.  We had about 150 people attend!

Our January membership drive was a huge success - even though this e-newsletter shows four new members there were many more who joined this month...my closest estimation is TEN NEW MEMBERS - isn't that awesome.  We just have to wait till our National headquarters processes the applications before we can publish the complete list - but I'll be sure to keep you informed.

Our February meeting is set to be just as fabulous as January - at The Iroquois Club in Bloomfield Hills, 6-9pm, Wednesday, February 14th.  You are all welcome to bring a Valentine - or celebrate this day with friends!  The menu is exquisite - cocktails and canapes, a three-course meal perfectly paired with wine and desserts are all included...and we have a gift planned for everyone.  Speaking of planning - our guest speaker is Jodi Wolf, author of "Event Planning Made Easy."  Jodi is one of the morning session speakers for the Event Advantage Seminar on Thursday, February 15th also at The Iroquois Club.

I would encourage you all to go to the website for the Event Advantage Seminar Series
www.eventadvantageseminars.com to view the complete program details.  Our Detroit NACE Chapter is sponsoring this event - we feel it is another good opportunity for enhancing your membership, another educational opportunity...and for $125 it's cheap!  These guest speakers run in the thousands (our chapter contacted Bryan Dodge but his speaker fee was WAY out of our budget for a chapter meeting) but by partnering with a well established organization we are still able to offer these first class speakers to our membership - at a discounted rate from the general admission price too!

As always, if you have any comments or feedback to grow our chapter I encourage you to call or email anytime.

Chapter President, Greater Detroit Chapter of NACE

Mimi Markofsky from Elite Kosher Catering participates in the Relay for Life to benefit the American Cancer Society.  For those of you who aren't familiar with this event, The Relay For Life is a fun-filled overnight event designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for research and programs of your American Cancer Society. During the event, teams of people gather at schools, fairgrounds, or parks and take turns walking or running laps. Each team tries to keep at least one team member on the track at all times.  Mimi's group is at West Bloomfield High, and her event if the weekend of June 9 - 10.

I have a team put together for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in honor of our dear friend and NACE member Debbie Heuchert.  This event is on June 16th and is held in downtown Detroit at Comerica Park.  The Race for the Cure isn't really as daunting as it sounds - participants can choose to either walk a 1K, walk 5K or run 5K (I am going to try to run, but it will end up being a jog/walk/crawl, I'm sure), or just raise funds and awareness!

Tabletop WOW Call for Entries

Detroit NACE Members - here is your chance to show off your decor talents at our third annual Tabletop WOW Competition!  For those of you who haven't heard about tabletop WOW - this is THE MOST AMAZING affiliate showcase of the year.  Designers join together to enter a table vignette...and the results are amazing - trends galore.  There aren't enough descriptive words for this event - in the past our members tabletop entries have been over-the-top, flamboyant, TOTALLY WOW!

Tabletop WOW III - ENTER YOUR DESIGN BY MARCH 31ST!
Wednesday, April 18th, 2007
Roostertail, Downtown Detroit
6pm - 9pm

Any NACE member in good standing can be the lead designer of a table vignette.  The lead designer can recruit anyone (NACE and non-NACE members) to join their team and create their tabletop design.  You must enter by Saturday, March 31st!

NACE members can be a part of many entries - and this year they can submit more than one entry (given space is available.)  Also new this year, we are judging tables in more than one category...Fantasy Weddings and Dynamic Designs (we're not sold on the award names yet so if you have better suggestions for a wedding category and a non-wedding category name, email me today!)

TABLES DO NOT NECESSARILY NEED TO BE FUNCTIONAL - WE WILL NOT BE REQUIRING GUESTS TO SIT AT THE TABLETOP ENTRIES IN 2007.

We have asked the talented Laura Davis, President of Laura Davis Weddings, to coordinate the event AND SECURE PRESS FOR THIS EVENT!  She is working with a PR firm to get your names in print and designs on TV!  At least that's our goal!!

For members that are not able to enter a design, you can still participate by donating an item in our silent auction.  Our Fundraising Chair, James Aslanian, will email more information on the silent auction shortly.

Last year we had almost 200 people attend Tabletop WOW - in 2007 we have decided to promote this event to the general public - so the sky is the limit!  We encourage each of you to invite your Brides and corporate clients.  The cost is $30 for NACE members and $40 for guests to attend.  You can go online to www.detroitNACE.net to RSVP today!

The rules of entry are simple: -
*  Your entire design must fit into an imaginary 10 x 10 square
*  Your table must seat 8 guests
*  You may not hang anything from the venue's ceiling
*  Electricity can be arranged (two weeks notice required)
*  The venue will provide one 60" round table - you may choose to bring your own table

YOU MUST LET US KNOW IF YOU INTEND TO ENTER A TABLE BY SATURDAY, MARCH 31ST IN ORDER TO BE INCLUDED IN ALL PROMOTIONAL MATERIAL.

Late entries will be accepted on a first come first serve basis - space may become limited after March 31st - we would recommend you enter your table ASAP.  Keep in mind you have until April 4th to notify us of your design team members and electricity requirements - most important is to give us your lead designer name for the press releases before Saturday, March 31st.

SO HERE'S HOW YOU ENTER!
1)  Email Liz Bakunovich at liz@favorsalacarte.com before Saturday, March 31st
2)  Include the lead designer's name, company and any team members names
3)  Give your table a "title" - but you cannot include any information in the title that may identify the design team members or lead designer!  Judging is anonymous...

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO TELL US IF YOU ARE ENTERING THE WEDDING OR NON-WEDDING CATEGORY UNTIL TWO WEEKS PRIOR - AT WHICH TIME WE ALSO NEED YOUR FINAL TEAM MEMBERS NAMES AND ELECTRICITY REQUIREMENTS.

If you have any questions, feel free to call or email: -
Liz Bakunovich, Logistics Chair, 586-777-5668, liz@favorsalacarte.com
Laura Davis, Event Chair, 248-591-0161, laura@davisweddings.com
