NACE February 2009 President’s Message
The NACE train has left the station but it’s not too late to jump on board. How do you get on board? You do so by getting involved and giving back by simply participating. Showing up at meetings and participating when you get there is how our train will gather momentum. This month was a perfect example of how being a NACE member adds value to your career. We chose to use speakers from within our very own ranks. They were educational…more importantly, they were inspirational!
What we allowed to happen this month was to focus on the possibilities around us. People left feeling upbeat and light on their feet. This didn’t happen by accident. It happened because people like Lindsay Simms, the meeting organizer, worked to make it happen. Great things take effort. When you do the work and allow yourself to be guided by the event industry gurus the outcome will sometimes even amaze you. What the leaders in our industry share is passion. Passion in everything they do. We are very fortunate to have some of the best and brightest talent right amongst our very own.
March is about giving for NACE. Of course, we’ll do it in by having a party. The March 18th fundraiser at the Royal Park Hotel will be a partnership benefiting Lighthouse. Lighthouse provides inspiration and support to people in need as they move from crisis to self-sufficiency. NACE will give a portion of all ticket sales back to Lighthouse who supports people in need here in southeast Michigan. When you get your meeting notification please forward it to everyone on your contact list. In order for this event to be successful we’ll need more than just people in the catering world to attend. Please invite your family and friends to share in a wee bit of Irish fun. The $50 ticket price is the same for everyone and you can purchase them beginning now on the DetroitNACE.net website. Please direct your list to register online for this event.
My last message this month is about being thankful. No matter what your current position in life is, be thankful. What you are experiencing right now is what you need to experience in order to get to the next train station on your journey. Sometimes the experiences are fun – other times they are painful. The interesting thing about this is you get to decide which experience it is…is it fun or is it painful? I’d like to remind you that sometimes when the train stops you should get off and walk around. Take in the sights or just ponder where the next train might take you. The most important thing to remember is you have to get back on the train.
All my best,
Todd Lloyd

February NACE Chapter Meeting Recap
Wedding Luncheon
On February 18th NACE hosted our first “Wedding Luncheon” located at Laurel Manor Banquet and Conference Center. Deirdre Stemmelen and her team did an outstanding job with the menu which consisted of a fabulous mixed field green salad with an interactive presentation of toppings such as a flavorful grilled shrimp skewers, marinated chicken, fresh fruit, chevre cheese and toasted almonds. The lunch was accompanied by homemade pasta and Italian bread followed by a delectable plate of artful mini pastries and an international coffee station. A Great job by the Executive Chef and the Laurel Manor Team. The culinary creation and presentation was divine!
Angela Butorac kicked off the meeting with our newly introduced concept of “NACE Show and Tell” which turned out to be a very successful speed networking portion of the chapter meeting. Many guests commented on the great opportunity to meet members and share product and company information with each other. Our plan is to continue with the “Show and Tell” networking program during many upcoming chapter meetings.
The room design and décor was dramatic. Chair Covers & Linens provided gorgeous linen and an embroidered overlay that looked stunning on the tables. MPE topped our wedding table with a bountiful array of flowers displayed in a unique iron holder which held glimmering votive candles. The presentation offered a trendy, innovative option for a floral centerpiece. Last but certainly not least, Quest Lighting enhanced the centerpieces and ballroom with lighting which added depth to the room and enhanced the entire event.
One of our NACE goals in 2009 is to provide our members with stronger educational programs. This meeting truly launched our educational program series and was filled with a collection of knowledgeable, professional and insightful speakers! I truly left the meeting inspired and excited to apply several newly learned trends to my catering business.
Debbie Heuchert from Champagne Chocolates shared many cost effective ways to offer chocolate and toffee favors on a budget such as purchasing the candy in bulk and packaging them on your own. Mark Ephraim from MPE Event Productions discussed marketing ideas he learned from his recent return from the Special Events National Conference. Mark stressed the importance of modern technology. He shared that over 70% of brides research products, venues and vendors on the internet. Brides are extremely visual and offering a comprehensive, interactive website contributes to the success of your business. Mark discussed the importance of all working together as a team and building alliances to keep our event industry strong.
Jerome Raska from Blumz…by JRDesigns was invited to speak at the Special Events National Conference and shared three industry design trends which include:
“Modern Royal” – Grey, Metallic, Tortoise Shell and Full Vases
“Urban People” – Bamboo Leaf, Concrete, Vibrant Green Colors and Asphalt
“Best Friends” – Tomato Red, Cucumber Green, Lime, Clay and Buttercup
Jerome encouraged the audience to “create their own destiny” and “sell positive”. He talked about the power of attraction and if you are a negative person you will attract negative clients. Staying positive is a key component to the success of you and your business.
Mike Staff from Mike Staff Productions finished our educational program with a positive outlook on the current economic condition and the vision of prosperity for all. Mike emphasized that we need to “work on our business and not in our business”. Mike suggested we continue to share our compelling company stories and build in “perceived value” when selling packages. It is time to get creative with marketing, give outstanding service and look at the glass as being full rather than empty. The best is yet to come for all!
What more can I say, this was certainly a dynamic group of speakers who are all well respected in our industry. They captured our NACE members and inspired all of us. The enthusiasm they shared with the audience was contagious and on behalf of the board I thank them all for taking the time to speak to our group and offer a well planned presentation.
A special thank you to Lindsay Simms, Program Co-Chair for planning such an inspirational and informative meeting, we received many positive comments from our NACE chapter members. Our 2009 board is looking forward to keeping the momentum going all year, we are working diligently behind the scenes to offer strong educational, upbeat, trend setting NACE Chapter Meetings throughout the year. Be sure to save the date for our next NACE meeting. The best is yet to come!
