President Report

President's Report President’s Message

Embracing the craziness and loving it! This was in large part the message at this month’s NACE meeting. We learned about creating balance – however you define that for yourself.

Everyone I talk to tells me how busy they are and how hard they are working. Yes, we are all working harder for less profit. What NACE tried to help you understand this month is that’s O.K. – for now. As an industry group, we seem to have short memories. We want to compare today to 2006 when it was easy and we were all basically order takers. Today it is the team that not only has the skill, but also knows how to work smart and hard that will be the winners. We have to look for ways to do what we do better while at the same time doing it at a lower cost than we’ve ever done before. Companies that understand this will be stronger entities in the days ahead. Your NACE leaders do understand this and we are constantly looking at how we can create value for our members. This month was the best example of how we are doing it through education. Cindy Novotny, a nationally recognized motivational speaker, shared her story on how she became the power house she is today. Everyone left inspired and pledged to challenge themselves to look at and do things differently.

In the coming months we plan to teach our members about some of the social networking do’s and don’ts. This is a hot topic and one that everyone can benefit from by learning how it can impact their business. Next month we’ll learn about Destination Events at Mayesh Wholesale Florist in Romulus. We’re trying to mix up our locations because we recognize our members are spread all over the state. Last month we had quite a number of people who traveled from northern Michigan to our Table Top Wow meeting.

Our spring membership drive ends next week. If you or someone you know wants to be a part of the largest and most dynamic event industry association in Michigan now’s the time to join. You’ll save $100 off the normal cost of membership. Time is running out thou and you’ll need to contact me at Todd@LinenHero.com to get this offer. We’ve had a hugely successful campaign so far – thank you to everyone who has helped by joining or getting others to join.

Lastly, your association, NACE, is here to help you in any way we can. It is members helping members that makes our group unique when compared to other organizations. When I have a question about just about anything in our industry I always know there is a NACE member who knows the answer. So, if you’re struggling with something give a NACE friend a call … it’s part of the working smarter formula.

Program Recap

If you missed Wednesday's meeting....you missed out....but the good news is that we are here to fill you in!

Cindy Novotny from Master Connection Associates was kind enough to speak to our amazing crew of members and guests. Her presentation included stories from her travels, raising a family and being a female in our industry.

My favorite part of her presentation talked about bad behaviors in this bad economy. Such behaviors such as sighing or rolling of the eyes. She said she tells her staff that "they are in the business of training and no where in their training is there a module for sighing". She brought a laugh to every example and focused on the positive while encompassing reality.

She also touched on whining and how she responds with "stop with the blah blah blah and start singing falahlahlahlah, because you have a job".

She was an absolutely dynamic speaker who brought a breath of fresh air to our membership and organization!

If you are interested in getting a copy of her book Living with No Balance...and Loving It, go online to www.masterconnection.com and click on the book for more details.
