President's Report

This month we start not only a new year but a new decade.  At the beginning of a new decade, we have arrived at a moment unlike any other in the history of the event and catering industry.  As I reflect back on the past 10 years, I can't believe how much our world has changed.  Technology has been the driving force in changing how we do business.  I believe how we use the technology will be how this decade is defined 10 years from now.

"The difference between doing nothing and doing something is everything"- this quote by Daniel Berrigan provides a wonderful way to think about the New Year and New Decade.  Most of us can't help but reflect about the passage of another year when the next one is looming around the corner. It's also a new decade, which provides yet another benchmark for many of us and questions like "What have I accomplished?" and "Am I where I want to be in my career, relationships, education?" come up. As you begin to reflect upon this, keep in mind the following to help you stay optimistic and energetic for the coming year:

1. DON'T BE TOO HARD ON YOURSELF - we are our own worst critic! It's easy to look at what you haven't accomplished and sometimes hard to remember what you have accomplished over the past year (or decade). MAKE A LIST of what you've done first, then look at the list of things you still want to do or change the list you have, since there may be differences in what you want to accomplish now.

2. BE REALISTIC - keep in mind that our daily lives must continue despite having wonderful things to aspire towards - we still have laundry to do, children to raise, homes to keep clean and commitments that we can't get out of or feel obligated to do. When you add all this up, it's often hard to find the time to work towards a goal you may have set. BE EASY ON YOURSELF.

3. APPRECIATE THE "HERE AND NOW". Even if you aren't completely satisfied with what you've done or think you could (should?) have done more, appreciate and be grateful for your current situation. This might include having children, having a home, being employed or having a good friend. Remember, that when we think too much about the future or dwell on the past, then we aren't enjoying the NOW.

4. MAKE A NEW LIST FOR THE COMING YEAR/DECADE - re-create the list you've had from before, add new thing or take away things you realize you don't really want to do any more. After all, as we live our life, our circumstances change, our relationships can change and our priorities can change. Re-visit who you are and what you want from life and START ANEW!

My message this month is to take the time to reflect and plan your life.  If you do, you’ll benefit from your past experience in creating the life you desire.  Get excited about creating extraordinary events, and join the growing NACE Team in February for our annual Wedding Trends and Design Event.  The meeting details are posted on www.DetroitNACE.net.

Program Recap

The first NACE meeting of the year was also a first of its kind for the NACE family.  We were hosted by our NACE family members Greg and Ryan Kosch the owners of the Lafayette Grand in Pontiac.  Lafayette is an extroidanary facility, this historic masonic temple has character gallor!  Lafayette was also a great spot for this first of a kind event!  We did a series of team building exercises hosted by Premium Event Service.   The Premium Event Service team created some really fun events that brought out our best and helped us all learn a little more about each other!
