Program Recap

May 2010 Meeting Recap

The meeting took place at MPE Events in Livonia.  There were about 6 round tables, as well as hi-top tables, all set with different tablescapes that fit the "over the top" color and presentation that most ethnic weddings incorporate.  MPE set up amazing displays, such as a chuppah and a mandap, where some ethnic ceremonies take place.

The catering was great and so different from any other meeting! Outside catering was brought in by an Indian caterer, a Jewish caterer, and desserts were also provided.  The catering really helped with the overall education, because many who are not familiar with Indian food were able to experience and enjoy something completely new!  Red and white wine were provided, and all the tips were put towards the NACE Scholarship Fund.

The best and most impressive part of the whole meeting was the panel discussion.  The panel consisted of two Indian event planners, an Indian photographer, an Indian caterer, a Jewish Rabbi, and an event planner that specializes in detailed ethnic weddings. A moderator asked the panel to provide some basic information about traditions, timelines, budgets and more. They really worked together to provide great information and insights into the two cultures. It was also interesting to learn how many similarities there are between Jewish and Indian weddings. Because most of the panel has experience in both Ethnic and traditional American weddings, they were able to compare the two to help us understand the importance of certain aspects. For example, Fauzeen compared some details of an Indian ceremony to the kiss at the altar. The panel really encouraged those who have never planned an Ethnic celebration to feel comfortable taking on the job and feel free to ask the client questions. There was also a question and answer portion at the end of the meeting where NACE guests were able to ask questions to members of the panel. Overall, this was a very educational event and very well put together.

President Report

May 2010 President’s Report

The catering and event industry is like a very cool sports car – it can go from zero to 60mph in just a few seconds and it can stop on a dime.  It was just a few months ago my conversations with many of you were about how we can jump start our industry and today I keep hearing about how busy everyone is.  This is fantastic news!

NACE is also moving at record speed.  33 of you joined our organization during our spring membership drive pushing our chapter to its highest membership level ever!  What’s the attraction? – Its great programming and networking opportunities that are driving our membership growth.  If you haven’t checked us out in a long time please register for our next meeting.  In June we are going to focus on healthy catering.   We will again use a panel presentation of leading experts to educate us on healthy menu options and ideas to create a healthier guest experiences.  We’ll discuss trends that have been featured on TV shows like ‘Biggest Loser.’

I hope you’ll consider slowing your race car down enough to learn about something we can all benefit from ‘Healthy Living’.  I look forward to seeing all of you on the water in June!
